RICHARD GUZMAN

INDUSTRIAL DESIGNER. WOODWORKER. PILOT.

Profile

I'm Richard Guzman, an industrial designer. I figure out how things work, how to build them at scale, and how to make them intuitive for the people using them.

My design approach relies heavily on manufacturing reality, clean geometry, and structural discipline.

Outside the studio, I'm building a kit plane, working in the yard, or cooking. I like keeping busy and getting my hands dirty.

Experience

Dell | Senior Industrial Designer

(2016 - Present)

  • Lead the industrial design for Tower and Edge servers, focusing on making dense, complicated enterprise hardware clean and buildable.

  • Carved out a niche tackling complex geometry and pattern work. I use Python scripts to build algorithmic models in CAD so we don't have to surface thousands of intricate details by hand.

  • Spending a lot of time in the digital weeds with a team building rendering pipelines for digital twins. I try to make sure the digital design matches reality as closely as a photograph.

  • Tinker with AI and custom tools to speed up workflows. If there's a way to automate the tedious stuff so the team can get back to design, I'm usually the one figuring it out.

  • Ended up as a utility player for the studio—jumping between heavy engineering, advanced surfacing, and high-end visualization wherever I can be useful.

HEWN | Industrial Designer

(2014 - 2016)

  • Designed and built custom modern cabinetry, metalwork, and millwork.

  • Bridged the gap between the office and the shop floor, handling drafting, CNC programming, joinery, finishing, and BOM creation.

  • Learned exactly what it takes to turn an architect's concept into a physical, installed product while running quality control in the field.

  • Stepped outside standard millwork to help the owner design and visualize his own passion projects from scratch, including a custom paddleboard and a boat with a Western Red strip planking and a mahogany hull.

Dell | Industrial Design Intern

(2013 - 2014)

  • Learned the realities of corporate design and enterprise product development.

  • Turned a childhood habit of building PCs into a professional foundation, making the connections that brought me back full-time two years later.

Education

Auburn University | B.S. Industrial Design

(2008 - 2013)

  • Pivoted from Mechanical Engineering to Industrial Design after realizing where my actual strengths were.

  • Worked as a shop assistant managing the metal, wood, molding, and finishing labs.

  • Learned early on that hand-waving doesn't build parts—accurate CAD drawings, proper tolerances, and real plans do.
